From online entertainment pioneer, actress, and “queen of the geeks” Felicia Day, You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) is a “relentlessly funny and surprisingly inspirational” (Forbes.com), memoir about her unusual upbringing, her rise to internet stardom, and embracing her weirdness to find her place in the world.

When Felicia Day was a girl, all she wanted was to connect with other kids (desperately). Growing up in the Deep South, where she was “home-schooled for hippie reasons,” she looked online to find her tribe. The internet was in its infancy and she became an early adopter at every stage of its growth—finding joy and unlikely friendships in the emerging digital world. Her relative isolation meant that she could pursue passions like gaming, calculus, and 1930’s detective novels without shame. Because she had no idea how “uncool” she really was.

But if it hadn’t been for her strange background— the awkwardness continued when she started college at sixteen, with Mom driving her to campus every day—she might never have had the naive confidence to forge her own path. Like when she graduated as valedictorian with a math degree and then headed to Hollywood to pursue a career in acting despite having zero contacts. Or when she tired of being typecast as the crazy cat-lady secretary and decided to create her own web series before people in show business understood that online video could be more than just cats chasing laser pointers.

Felicia’s rags-to-riches rise to internet fame launched her career as one of the most influential creators in new media. Ever candid, she opens up about the rough patches along the way, recounting battles with writer’s block, a full-blown gaming addiction, severe anxiety and depression—and how she reinvented herself when overachieving became overwhelming.

Showcasing Felicia’s “engaging and often hilarious voice” (USA TODAY), You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) is proof that everyone should celebrate what makes them different and be brave enough to share it with the world, because anything is possible now—even for a digital misfit. DNF: TV Show Edition

I know a lot of book bloggers that have their DNF (did not finish) pile. I have that same kind of pile, but with television shows. There are some shows I get so excited for, but they end up being lack luster.

I tend to try and and give a show one full season before I call it quits, but there are some shows that I have to force myself to continue to watch every week. Other shows I try and try and try and can’t get through them (one of these kinds of shows I’m sure will end me in nerd purgatory). Read More

Everywhere You Look: Fuller House Season 1

Everywhere You Look: Fuller House Season 1
(I tried to keep this as spoiler free as possible…)

I grew up watching episodes of Full House, but aside from having a mild crush on Uncle Jesse, I don’t remember much of the series itself. What happened to Danny’s wife? Exactly how long the show was on? I recall that later I found out that the guy who played Steve, also did the voice of Aladdin. And that somehow Ted Mosby grows up to be Danny Tanner (which is a surprisingly accurate connection I hadn’t thought about until this moment). Even though I didn’t remember any exact story lines, I did remember that it made me laugh and it made me happy to watch, so when Netflix said they were doing a reboot (for lack of a better word) I was skeptical. It seems that a lot of shows and networks are hitting us Millennials hard in the nostalgia bone lately, and it is WORKING.

Thursday & Thrilled: Let’s Catch Up!

February has been a hard month for me. After getting some pretty emotional news at the beginning of the month it’s thrown me into a terrible funk. I’ve been working through this news and have finally started feeling more like myself. The funk is finally on it’s way out of my system and as such it is time to catch up with you!

I’ve missed you lovely readers!

Six on Six | February

What the frak is Six on Six?
A little while ago Scruffy-Little Nerf Herder started a monthly photo challenge to showcase geeky things around your house that correspond to that month’s color.

This is a great way to work on your photography skills and showcase your geekery at the same time. Practice makes perfect after all, and I could use all the practice!

February’s color is BLACK. While I have a handful of great black things, I had a difficult time narrowing down what I wanted to showcase. But ultimately, I came up with some fun choices. Read More

New Adventures of Peter and Wendy | #AllTheTales

New Adventures of Peter and Wendy | #AllTheTales

With a little faith, trust and some pixie dust… a youtube series based on J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan is born. The New Adventures of Peter and Wendy has been on my “need to share this amazing series with the world” pile for a while now. After Emma Approved ended and Classic Alice was on hiatus last year, I was aching for a new series to watch. I had devoted so much time and emotion to those series and I wanted something to fill the void.

I saw a gif set of the adorable Kyle Walters on tumblr, but it wasn’t from his work on Welcome to Sanditon so I was curious as to what this new series he was working on was. Little did I know that he was playing Peter Pan.

New Adventures of Peter and Wendy
But What’s It About?

Everyone has to grow up, right? Well, not if Peter Pan has anything to say about it! Peter, a late-twenties man-child and comic book artist living in the small town of Neverland Ohio, has three life goals: 1) NEVER GROW UP. 2) Have as much fun as humanly possible while doing as little work as possible. 3) Win the heart of his best friend, Wendy Darling. With his friends John, Michael, Lily and his fairy, Tinkerbell, Peter is nailing goals 1 and 2. Goal 3, however, is a bit trickier. Wendy Darling, an advice vlogger and overall go-getter, is tired of the never-changing small town of Neverland Ohio and wants to see the world, to become… an adult. It’s Peter vs Growing Up in the battle for Wendy! But is growing up really the enemy? Or is it the solution? (from their about page)

Peter Pan has always been one of those stories that I wanted to like, but never really felt connected to it as much as I wanted to be. Part of that could be that I’ve only ever seen the Disney Animated movie and… well, Hook. It’s one of the classics that I really want to sit down and read through… especially after seeing this adaptation.

Peter would have to be one of the best characters to play, and while watching NAoPaW it’s clear that Kyle has SO much fun with the series. He has the perfect balance of innocence and mischief and channels that well into Peter.

But what I didn’t expect was to see and relate to Wendy as much as I did. In the animated movie Wendy is bossy and didn’t really have a ton of depth. She told stories but was hesitant to be a child herself. Wendy Darling in NAoPaW has her moments where she revels in the innocence of her small town life with her brothers and best friend, Peter. But her desire to leave and grow up is always in the back of her mind. Even when she’s coping with rejection, she bounces back and forth between taking it like an adult and… well, not…

Even throughout Season Two where she is supposed to be more “grown up”, there is still a little bit of Neverland in her.

As I started watching this series I loved what they were doing with the transmedia and the way they embraced their inner geek. As well as how they embraced the geeks that watch. From weekly recaps of recent Doctor Who episodes, to unboxing videos for their Loot Crates each month. Add the legit site for The Kensington Chronicle featuring articles and art from the characters (art drawn by Kyle Walters himself!), and you’ll agree the transmedia team has done an awesome job with making the viewer feel like an integral part of the town.

I liked that this web-series reinvigorated my want to read classics. There are some classics that everyone should read, but I have always had a hard time with. I enjoy series that get me interested and curious about a classic, even if I don’t end up reading it.

If you haven’t watched The New Adventures of Peter and Wendy yet, please do! You won’t be dissapointed!

Thursday and Thrilled: From Mudfaces to Fairy Tales

Thursday and Thrilled: From Mudfaces to Fairy Tales

In addition to being sick at the beginning of the week, this week is usually one of the busiest weeks for me at my job. However busy-ness does not keep me from being thrilled about things.

Here are some things that I have been thrilled with the past few weeks. Read More

Just Keep Running…

In 2015 I committed to running in four 5ks. While it was more difficult than I care to admit, I’m very glad I did. I ended the year with an 88 mile run (over the course of 2+ months), and felt like I was on top of the world. Of course then the holidays sank in and now I’m dreading my first race of the year.

I am not a runner. I am trying to be a runner (sort of), and Geek’d Out Events is one of the ways I’ve been doing so. They host nerd themed 5ks throughout the year all benefiting AMAZING causes.

In 2015 I participated in a Star Wars 5k benefiting Adoption Exchange, Harry Potter 5k benefiting The Children’s Justice Center, Doctor Who 5k benefiting American Childhood Cancer Association , a qualifying Video Game 5k, and then a Back to the Future 88-miler benefiting the Michael J. Fox foundation. I benefit greatly from living in the state where the 5ks are hosted. Those that don’t have that benefit, Geek’d Out still has your back. GOE does a great job of organizing virtual races for the 5ks, so that anyone who wants to participate can do so on their own time in their own town and still get the amazing medals.

All the medals from all the 5ks I’ve don’t this year. I’m exhausted! 😉

In 2016, GOE is planning on doing SIX 5ks through out the year, but keeping the themes pretty under wraps. One of the races will be Harry Potter themed (this year is RAVENCLAW), but the rest are a mystery.

Speaking of mysteries, GOE just announced that the first race of the year:

WILL BE SHERLOCK THEMED

The race is a virtual run as a 22.1 miler (as in 221 B Baker Street), called Baker Street Bound. In addition to getting a killer medal out of it, it benefits an amazing cause, Badges Supporting Fallen Officers Families (Fallen). Additonally, GOE has also organized a mystery to solve while running. Reaching certain milestones gives you clues to a mystery, anyone that participates and helps solve the case is entered to win a Blu-Ray gift set of the seasons of Sherlock.

Honestly, GOE has exceeded all of my expectations with every race. GOE is very well organized and chooses awesome groups to benefit. With every race, they get better and better. If you’re looking for a fun way to work out (a bit) and also benefit great causes look no further.

Thursday and Thrilled: Back to Basics

It’s only the second Thursday of the year and I’m already behind in these! Siiiiiiiigh! The past few weeks have been a weird range of emotions, but as of this week I’ve been in a pretty awesome mood all week. Spending my days with my awesome company and my evenings watching shows with my husband that make us laugh so hard I feel like I had done a million crunches. Finally getting out of my weird holiday funk.

With all of that, this is what I’m thrilled about this week
